Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. Before the age of 65, half of all Americans will experience skin cancer at least once, demonstrating that this is not strictly a disease of the elderly. In fact, the average age of patients diagnosed with skin cancer is trending downward, dropping from 50 to 40 years old.

More than 90 percent of all skin cancer cases are due to overexposure to sunlight. Most damage to your skin from the sun – approximately 75 percent – happens by the time we are 20 years old. This is one of the reasons Florida has the second highest rate of melanoma cases (a type of malignant skin cancer) in the nation.

Much like any form of cancer, skin cancer may require surgery. As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Cashio can remove cancerous growths using specialized techniques to preserve your health and appearance.

Dr. Cashio treats all types of skin cancer, from the smallest basal cell carcinoma to melanomas requiring sentinel lymph node sampling. Due to skin cancer’s prevalence in our community, this is a treatment Dr. Cashio performs daily in his practice.

Although no surgery is without scars, Dr. Cashio will make every effort to treat your skin cancer without dramatically changing your appearance.
